ADVENT 2018 SERMON SERIES: Word Made Flesh

The incarnation is “a kind of vast joke whereby the Creator of the ends of the earth comes among us in diapers… Until we too have taken the idea of the God-man seriously enough to be scandalized by it, we have not taken it as seriously as it demands to be taken.” Frederick Buechner

During this 2018 *Advent season we are taking a bit of a deep dive into the first chapter of the gospel of John exploring the idea of the WORD, that is Jesus, being made FLESH – and the implications of this for our faith and life. The big theological word for this is: incarnation. Join us as we journey toward Christmas!

12/2 – The True God (John 1:1-5)
12/9 – The True Lamb (John 1:6-8, 19-34)
12/16 – The True Light (John 1:4-9)
12/23 – The True Life (John 1:10-13)
12/24 – The Word Made Flesh (John 1:14-18) Christmas Eve

The first Sunday of advent introduces the theme of Jesus as the True God. He really is the Word who was there in the beginning and through him all things were made. In week 2 we’ll explore Jesus as the Lamb of God, born to die for our sins. Week 3 shows us Jesus as the True Light who steps into the darkness. Jesus is the True Life – which we’ll talk about on that 4th Sunday of advent – receiving Jesus means a new birth and a new family.  On Christmas Eve, we’ll talk about how Jesus makes God knowable.

*Advent is about waiting and anticipation. We put ourselves into the story of God’s redemption as the people of Israel, hoping and longing for the coming Messiah. In Advent we also wait for Jesus’ Kingdom that is yet to come, since it hasn’t yet fully come. So we anticipate Christ’s coming again to restore all things, making all things new.
